Homeownership is one of the most important milestones as an adult, but most of our attention is generally on the visible side of things -- painting, remodeling and updating our homes. But how often do we think about our home security?

How to Protect Your Home When You Aren’t Home

Protecting your home with smart security devices is easier than you may think. Building your own smart home security system that can allow you to see what is happening at and around your home even when you are on vacation will provide you with peace of mind.

These are some of the smart home security devices you should use to create a security system that will keep you safe when you are home, and when you are away.

Control Who is Visiting You - Smart Doorbell Cameras

Smart video doorbell cameras are often considered the grandfather of smart home security devices. Doorbell cameras give you the ability to see and communicate with someone who is at your door even if you are miles away from home. Using an Android or iOS app, will allow you to see who is ringing the door and choose whether or not to speak with them or let them into your home.

This gives you complete control over when and where you allow someone access into your home. The doorbell camera also allows you to see when packages are delivered, so you can ask a friend or neighbor to collect them if you are away from home.

Control Who Gets Inside Your Home - Smart Door Locks

While deadbolt locks are still the most secure way to prevent entry to your home, adding a smart door lock that works with your existing deadbolt can give you more control over how people enter your home. Smart door locks can allow you to remove the traditional key lock and use more modern options like codes and fingerprint identification.

You can set codes for each member of your family, or for people who enter your home periodically like maid services or babysitters. Fingerprint identification adds a second layer of protection as it cannot be shared with others as a code can. Smart door locks also allow you to grant someone access to your home when you are away using a smartphone app.

Monitor What They Are Doing in Your Home - Smart Security Cameras

While smart doorbell cameras and door locks can help protect the exterior of your home, smart security cameras can provide you with the ability to see what is happening inside your home when you are away. Smart home security cameras will not only allow you to view the video in real time using a smartphone app, but they will also record video. Recorded video can provide valuable data to law enforcement should someone break into you home.

Security cameras can also allow you to check on pets, or even babysitters or cleaning services when you are away from home. By adding outdoor smart cameras, you can also see who is outside of your home, and be notified by an alert if the camera detects motion.
